THE BLUE «EXPRESS» FOR THREE DECADES MAKES
HISTORY IN THE
IRAKLIS one of the mighty teams in Greek Volleyball history
from the beginning of the Greek Volleyball era. The Club officials through the years tried very hard for the clubs various
distinctions for both Men and Women sections. The funs also helped very much for all the Clubs achievements, receiving for
themselves lots of good times and pride.
Since 1968, this is the beginning of the Greek National Championship,
IRAKLIS has always been among the leaders, participating ever since in all competitions.
The Club has always been contributing players for the National Volleyball
team and many of the Club's players have achieved International recognition.
In the early seventies IRAKLIS has assembled a great team. This incredible
team had Xenofon Kalogeropoulo as a head coach and the star of the team was Nikos Antoniadis. The Blue Team was unbeatable
for a long time. The rest of the players were Spiros Avramidis, Michalis Karipidis, Kiriakos Passalis, Giorgos Sakouelos,
Dimitris Stamatiou, Antonis Papadopoulos and Dimitris Gaitatzis.
It is worth mentioning that during these years the Men's National team
had 8 IRAKLIS players out of the total 12 Internationals.
Despite all these IRAKLIS never had the opportunity to win a National
title. The competition rules were in favor of the Athens teams, which always had more home games and in general much higher
budgets. As a result of all these IRAKLIS kept ranking second.
The loss of Nikos Antoniadis (transferred to the French team Racing Paris)
brought the decline in the Empire.
Since then IRAKLIS has been trying for some important distinctions and
Titles. Iraklis new star Giannis Nikolaidis (member of the Golgen National Team) gave a new boost to the club.
Between 1987 and 1992 IRAKLIS won again its recognition within Greece
The glory days came after 1997, when a group of people with ambitions
and vision took over IRAKLIS.
The first title came in the year 2000 when IRAKLIS won the Greek Volleyball
Cup. The head coach Mr Leonis led the team in a superb victory against Olympiakos with 3-0 sets in Patra.
The best of them all came last season. IRAKLIS got everything.
1) the Greek Championship against Olympiakos (3-2 sets) 2) The Greek Cup
against Aris (3-1 sets) and in the final four of Opole, Poland ranked third in Europe against the Italian Matserata, The Polish
Mostoral and the Greek Olympiakos
